The course is full for January, but in view of the response I shall be running it again in February, 2009.
During the 4 sessions we shall be looking at paintings of the late 19th/early 20th centuries that formed the foundation of the Modern Movement in Art. The aim is to show how the break in tradition fuelled by the anti-establishment realism of Courbet, the innovative styles of Cezanne, Manet & Seurat and the symbolism and colour of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Matisse led to later developments in abstraction by artists like Picasso and Kandinsky.
Discussion, using slides, will focus on what we can learn about a painting just by looking at it, how much it reveals about the artist and his time, the role of distortion in painting and whether there is a common link between disparate works that identifies them as ‘art’.
The fee for the course is 50 euros with a maximum of twelve students. Sessions will take place in the studio at Les Rivieres, Barneville-Carteret on February 4th,11th,18th & 25th, 2009.
